SCO, MTS Terminal Servers and Problems with Printing
There is a problem on configurations which use SCO Open Server and Specialix terminal servers supporting printers.
When the system is rebooted, it is often necessary to power cycle or reboot mts devices and then boot the system once again to enable printing to printers on the terminal servers. This is due to a bug in the mtsd reverse telnet software.
The resolution is to utilise another piece of Specialix software called mtsc.
Mtsc can be used to cause terminal servers to be rebooted as a part of the rc2.d system initialisation sequences which are invoked during the server boot sequence.
To install mtsc :
(a) Login into root and at the # prompt enter :-
# mkdir mtsc (CR)
# cd mtsc (CR)
(b) Insert the floppy containing the mtsc software into the floppy drive and enter :-
# tar -xvf /dev/rdsk/f03ht <CR>
Once all the files have been loaded into /mtsc enter :-
# chmod 777 * (CR)
# chown root * (CR)
# chgrp sys * (CR)
WARNING WARNING WARNING
Please ensure that all Users are at the Unix login prompt before performing the following test :-
To test that the mtsc software is operational, select a convenient mts. At the root prompt enter the following :-
# /mtsc/mtsc -c /mtsc/test.cfg [mts name] (CR)
where [mts name] is the relevant entry in the /etc/hosts file.
Observe the mts; you should see indications that it is undergoing a reboot.
(e) To make all mts terminal servers reboot each time the system is rebooted add entry into /etc/rc2.d/S99mtsd for each mts terminal server :-
# /mtsc/mtsc -c /mtsc/test.cfg [mts name]
This should be before any entries to startup mtsd processes.
WARNING WARNING WARNING
NOTE
All printers need to be connected to the MTS part of an MTS/MTA configuration. This is because the mtsc script resets MTS only not MTA
Ensure all Users are at the Unix login prompt.
(f) Reboot the system and ensure that all printers will print.
(g) Recreate the root and CPIO emergency set.
Add the diskette containing mtsc to the Users media set.
Print out /etc/rc2.d/S99mtsd and add it to the "on-site" documentation set.
Diskettes containing mtsc software will be shipped with all new SCO based systems which incorporate Specialix mts terminal servers and upgrades to existing systems to include Specialix terminal servers.
Copies of mtsc software can be obtained from Paul White, Distribution Manager Software.
The Service Centre will be responsible for scheduling visits to existing configurations to upgrade them.
