MODIFICATION No: N/A
PRODUCT: 6000, 7000, 8000 ONLY
SUB-ASSEMBLY EXB 8205 TAPE DRIVE
ESTIMATED MAN HOURS N/A
CLASS OF CHANGE: INFORMATIONAL
REASON FOR CHANGE: TO RELEASE DETAILS OF NEW 8MM DAT TAPE DRIVE

        Change

The exabyte 8200 8mm DAT drive is now obselete and has been replaced by the exabyte 8205 drive. This
is a half height unit capable of mounting in a 5 1/4" half height pc bay or in its own free standing cabinet.
The tape is loaded horizontally into the drive.

        Description

The front panel contains 3 leds, an eject button and tape entry slot. See figure 1.

The rear of the drive has connectors for scsi data, SCSI addressing, dc power, as well as scsi terminator
        resistors. See figure 2.

Screw mounting holes are provided on sides and base.

        (tech serv ref 31/3/1)

        Indicators

Three leds on the front panel indicate drive status. Table 1 shows led combinations and their meanings.

        Loading/unloading tapes

To load a tape ensure top and bottom leds are off. Insert the tape cartridge with the label facing up.
The drive will then load and position tape at b.o.t. all leds are off for the first 8 seconds, then the bottom
led flashes until drive is ready when this led goes solid. Complete load cycle lasts approx 40 seconds.

To unload a tape press the eject button. The drive will complete the current operation, rewind and unload
tape, then eject the cartridge. If an error occurs the top led will flash. Press unload button to clear the
error then again to attempt tape unload.

        Scsi addressing

Refer to figure 2 for SCSI address block location. If remote addressing is installed the select cable will be
connected to this block. If required to set address on the drive refer to table 2.

        Address

        Jumper 0 1 2 3 4 5 6 7

        1 - 2 (msb) 0 0 0 0 1 1 1 1

        3 - 4 0 0 1 1 0 0 1 1

        5 - 6 (lsb) 0 1 0 1 0 1 0 1

        Table 2

        Note: remove all terminator packs

        Termination

An external terminator must be fitted when drive is the last scsi item. All internal terminator packs must be
removed. Refer to figure 2 for location.

The external terminator block locates on second SCSI connector on the rear of the cabinet.

        Cleaning

An approved cleaning tape should be used every 30 motion hours. The drive keeps track of motion hours
elapsed internally. At the 30 hour mark the top and bottom leds flash rapidly. This does not stop drive
        being used.

To clean drive insert the cleaning cassette, the drive will then automatically run the cleaning procedure.
This takes from 2 - 3 minutes. The cassette is ejected on completion.

Exabyte 3c tapes will do up to 9 cleans, exabyte 12c will do up to 36 cleans. If these tapes are used in
full height drives fewer cleans will occur due to longer tape path.

        * do not rewind and re-use cleaning cassette *

        Compatability

This drive cannot be used as an exchange for the full height 8200 drive due to differing connectors on the
        cabinet for the scsi cable.
