FECO 3000 # 35

FECO: 3000 # 35
MODIFICATION No: N/A
PRODUCT: NCR 3000 RANGE
SUB-ASSEMBLY 4MM TAPE DRIVE
ESTIMATED MAN HOURS N/A
CLASS OF CHANGE: INFORMATIONAL
REASON FOR CHANGE: TO ADVISE DIFFERENT TYPES OF 4MM DRIVES

Background

There are currently 3 types of 4mm DAT drives available for the 3000 systems. Two are manufactured by wangDAT. These have identical drives, but with 3.5" and 5 1/4" mountings. The third type is manufactured by WANGTEK.

* note that only the WANGTEK drive is suitable for moe. *

All drives utilise dds (digital data storage) industry standard recording format which is an overlay to the basic DAT format. This makes the tape readability between the differing types of drive possible.

** important **

Although WANGTEK and wangDAT drives are interchangeable do not replace a faulty drive of one manufactured with the other where ever possible. This is manDATory for moe systems.

Tapes

EDP recommend sony QG 90 metre tapes. Capacity of this tape length is 1.3GB on WANGTEK, 2.0GB on wang DAT with no compression and 8.0GB on wang DAT with compression. The recommended cleaning tape is also sony and can do up to 50 cleaning cycles.

WangDAT 3200

Front panel

The front panel contains 2 tri-colour leds and the eject button. The left led indicates SCSI activity and drive fault condition, the right led indicates cassette status.

Led colour state meaning

Left green on drive active on SCSI BUS

Red flashing drive fault condition exists

Right amber flashing loading/unloading cassette

On cassette in place no compression

Green on cassette in place with compression

Pressing the eject button briefly will rewind and eject the cassette. If this fails to eject a "power eject" cycle can be initiated by pressing and holding the eject button for 10 seconds. This will eject the tape immediately without rewinding or completing the current SCSI operation. This means that the Data on the tape may be corrupted, particularly if a write operation was being performed.

* warning * do not use 'power eject' except as a last resort

Jumpers/switches

Figure 1

Refer to figure 1 for switch/jumper/terminator locations.

J1 - SCSI connector

J2 - remote configuration (option - not used)

J3 - dc power connector

Rn1-3 - drive terminator resistors - fitted to drive if last unit

Jp1 terminator power - must be fitted if terminator resistors

Installed.

Switch description setting

1-1 buffered mode off

1-2 compression enable see note 1

1-3 SCSI protocol on

1-4 cassette load/unload option on

1-5,6,7,8 reserved

4-1 SCSI BUS parity enable on

4-2 SCSI BUS id lsb see note 2

4-3 SCSI BUS id see note 2

4-4 SCSI BUS id msb see note 2

Note 1: compression enable switch position will depend on previous deck/customer's order request. Colour of right hand led will indicate current deck compression type.

* important *this switch must be correctly set to

Enable reading of previously written tapes.

Note 2:set SCSI id as follows (1 = on, 0 = off)

Add 0 1 2 3 4 5 6 7

Sw

4 - 2 0 1 0 1 0 1 0 1

4 - 3 0 0 1 1 0 0 1 1

4 - 4 0 0 0 0 1 1 1 1

Cleaning

An approved cleaning cassette should be used every 8 - 10 hours of operation. Only use cassettes suitable for dds drives. Cleaning operation is automatic. When cassette is inserted, rh led will flash amber during cycle which takes approx 30 seconds, cassette is ejected on completion.

* warning * do not rewind and re-use cleaning cassettes

WANGTEK 6130 hs

Front panel

The front panel contains 2 leds and a eject button. The left led indicates tape motion, the right led indicates SCSI BUS activity.

Jumpers/switches

Refer to figure 2 for switch/jumper/terminator locations.

W1 - reserved - not installed

W2 - SCSI termination power source - installed if terminators fitted.

F1 -termination power fuse - installed if terminators fitted

P2 -external SCSI address connector (not used)

P3 -SCSI connector

P4 - test adaptor (factory use only)

Sw1-1 to sw1-3 - SCSI id - see table 1

Sw1-4 - SCSI parity - set to on (enable)

Sw1-5 to sw1-7 - SCSI protocol - all off (SCSI 2)

Cleaning

An approved cleaning cassette should be used every 20 hours of operation. Only use cassettes suitable for dds drives. Method of cleaning is as follows:

1. Press and hold eject button for 10 seconds.

(the left led will flash on later drives)

2. Release button and load cleaning cassette.

3. Drive will run tape and eject it on completion of cycle

(10 - 15 seconds).

* warning * do not rewind and re-use cleaning cassettes

Testing

Functionally test using normal procedures.

Recording

Note in site fault log and/or installation certificate the following:

1. Drive manufacturer and model

2. SCSI id

3. Compression enable/disable (wangDAT 3200)
