SVR4 # 1

FECO: SVR4 # 1
MODIFICATION NO: N/A
PRODUCT: UNIX SVR4 03.02 on NCRS20
SUB-ASSEMBLY: N/A
ESTIMATED MAN HOURS N/A
CLASS OF CHANGE: MANDATORY
REASON FOR CHANGE: ISSUE OF INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS FOR UNIX SVR4 03.02 ON NCRS20.

1. INTRODUCTION.

Due to changes in the architecture of an NCR S20 the load sequence for SVR4 MP-RAS is slightly different. The following procedure should be followed when loading or rebuilding an S20.

NOTE.

The S20 can ONLY be installed from CD-ROM, tape and boot flex installations are not supported and will not work correctly.

The oldest release of operating system that will support the S20 is 03.02.00.11.

Currently the MP-RAS core CD version is 03.02.00.08 and the maintenance CD version is 03.02.00.11.

2. BIOS CONFIGURATION.

The following settings need to be changed in the BIOS to support MP-RAS.

BIOS Option Required Setting
Primary and Secondary IDE Master and Slave None
Memory Cache Enabled
Large Disk Access Mode Other
On Board PS/2 Mouse (IRQ 12) Enabled
PCI-IRQs to IO-APIC Mapping Disabled

3. IRQ SETTINGS.

The following IRQ’s should to used where necessary.

Interrupts 5 and 9 are usually made available for use by Specialix I/O8+ and RIO adapters.

4. SYSTEM DUMP CONFIGURATION.

PCI slot 4 (the slot closest to the CPU’s) must only be occupied by an additional SCSI controller. If any other adapter is installed in this slot it will create an interrupt conflict that will cause the machine to hang when a system dump occurs.

The slot can also be left empty.

5. INSTALLATION.

NOTE.

The machine MUST be booted from the Maintenance Updates CD-ROM for the installation to work correctly.

    1. Insert NCR UNIX SVR4 MP-RAS System Software Maintenance Updates Edition 2 (version 03.02.00.11) CD into the drive and boot the server from the CD.
    2. Select 1. Perform Installation.
    3. Select 1. Interactive Installation.
    4. Enter the appropriate System Name.
    5. Change the date and time if necessary.
    6. Select 1. SCSI CD-ROM Disk - /dev/rdsk/c0t6d0s0 when the Install Media menu appears.
    7. When prompted, remove the Maintenance Updates CD from the drive and insert the NCR UNIX SVR4 MP-RAS System Software Server Suite Core CD Edition 1 (release 03.02.00.08) CD into the drive.
    8. Select the Root disk /dev/rdsk/c0t0d0s0 (If the server had been booted from the Core CD this would be defaulting to /dev/rdsk/c10t0d0s0. This is wrong and will not install correctly. The SCSI controller on the motherboard should function as controller 0. Any additional SCSI controllers function as controller 1 onwards.)
    9. Select 0: No Secondary Disk Selection.
    10. Confirm the disk selection to continue the installation.
    11. Enter N to the prompt Re-format Hard Disk.
    12. The root disk partition table will then be displayed. Select 1. Create a UNIX Partition.
    13. Enter Y to mark the partition as active when prompted.
    14. Enter 4 to exit and update disk configuration.
    15. Licence Installation. Insert the Licence Flex disk into the diskette drive and enter 1 to install a flex licence.Repeat this for each licence flex and then enter X to save and exit the licence installation program.
    16. A list of packages to be installed will then be displayed. Use the default selection of packages shown plus the following list and any other packages that are required by the installation.
      acp
      cacheopt
      enetpci
      unlimusr
Enter X to save and exit the package selection.
    17. Questions asked by any of the selected packages will then be displayed.
    18. Select 1 - Microsoft 2 button PS/2 style mouse.
    19. Press Enter when asked if the kernel should be rebuilt to select the default response.
    20.

    21. Select 3 - R5 Mach64 800x600x8 (256 colours).
    22. Press Enter for the default response to the remaining X-server questions.
    23. The slice table for the root disk will then be displayed. Increase or add the slices as required for the installation.
Press Control+X to save and exit from the slice table configuration.
    24. UNIX will now start to install itself and all selected packages automatically.
    25. Once the core applications have been installed, the server will prompt for the Maintenance CD to be inserted. Eject the Core CD and insert the Maintenance Updates CD. Press Enter to continue.
    26. A list of patches will then be displayed. Use the default selection of patches presented. Press X to save the selection and exit.
    27. A number of patches require a rebuild of the kernel. These patches will ask whether the kernel should be rebuilt after installation. Press Enter to use the default response to these questions.
    28. The selected patches will now be installed.
    29. Once the maintenance patches have been installed, the server will request a reboot. Eject the Maintenance Updates CD from the drive and press Enter to reboot the system.
    30. The configuration of the server can continue as a normal SVR4 installation would do.
