The US Robotics Sportster Flash Modem is the new dial up diagnostic modem to be supplied with all systems: it replaces all previous dial up diagnostic modems. It may also be called a 3 com sportster modem.
It is dark grey in colour and measures approx 6 x 4.5 x 1.5 inches. There is an external power supply mounted in the 13 amp plug. It can lay flat or has a foot to be mounted vertically.
At the rear there are left to right, a 25 pin D type connector for data, a connector for a speaker, an RJ45 connector to the analogue PSTN phone line, an RJ45 connector for a phone and a dc connector for the power.
Its speed is from 300 to 33.6k. The EDP specification is shown in Para 4.

The sportster modem is for asynchronous two wire pstn operation only. It does not have a leased line, synchronous or edp fax capacity.
The phone connection is to allow an analogue phone to share the same phone socket line. To use this line for phone, the modem must be switched off. You cannot use the modem and phone in conjunction with each other.
Compatibility data: ITU-T V.34 (Inc.33,600bps), V.FC, ITU-T V.32bis, V.22 bis, V.21 and bell 212a.

Standard cable specs are to be used except that where 3 wire cables are used, pin 8 at the modem must not be connected to pins 6 and 20, i.e. shorts on 4 & 5 and 6 & 20 only.
