FECO: | 3000 # 52 |
MODIFICATION No: | N/A | |
PRODUCT: | NCR 3430 | |
SUB-ASSEMBLY | NCR3-3430-SYSTEM BOARD
ESTIMATED MAN HOURS | APPROX. 1.5
CLASS OF CHANGE: | MANDATORY UPON FAILURE
REASON FOR CHANGE: | TIMING ERRORS BETWEEN SYSTEM BOARD AND SCSI CONTROLLER |
1. Reason for change
NCR reports that some NCR
3430 systems are having SCSI bus gross errors. These
are caused by timing errors
of the SCSI clk and bclk signals to the 53c710 asic chip.
2. Unit affected
All ncr 3430 units with the baseboard part number 515-0001864.
3. failure indications
3.1 BIOS:
Failure to boot, systems hangs.
3.2 Unix:
Error messages
"SCSI gross error" usually followed by "SCSI bus reset". This may
happen at any time as
some units fail "cold" and others need to warm up. Failure
may not be recoverable.
3.3 netware:
System seems to hang or be "very slow" in performance.
No indicating error messages.
3.4 NT:
System has poor response, slow in performance,
System hangs.
4. Change
If the ncr 3430 is
experiencing any of the indications detailed above (para 2 & 3)
then the resolution is
to replace the baseboard and any daughter cards fitted.

5. Action
5.1 at every site visit to an ncr
3430 system the service centre and the engineer are
to
check if the baseboard part number has been checked previously. To check,
view
the call history, if there is a job against the 3430 system board with the
job
details "check bbd ok" or "check bbd prob" then the number will have
been
checked. If
it has not, and the system has to be opened, then the baseboard
part number
must be checked, and the details given to the service centre.
5.2 when the engineer checks the
baseboard part number, he is to record it and the
serial
number. The engineer must then inform the service centre. The service
centre will
raise a new job using the site code of the 3430 system, and the
following :
Telephone number
Contact name
Serial number the baseboard serial number
Device ncr3-3430-system-board
Job details
If part number is 515-001864 then enter:- check bbd prob
If part number is not the above then enter:- check bbd ok
In the tac assessment enter:-
"feco 3000# 52 baseboard part no (enter number)"
Clear the call
If the part number is 515-0001864
Enter the clear as:- "check bbn number possible problem"
If the part number is not 515-0001864
Enter the clear as:- "check bbd number ok"
Viewing the history will show if the baseboard number as been checked and the
results.
The service centre must inform technical services of the results of the checks.
