DTC Driver Packages
ESTIMATED MAN HOURS N/A
CLASS OF CHANGE: MANDATORY
REASON FOR CHANGE: DATA LOSS DUE TO DTC DRIVER AND RTC TYPE

1. Reason for change:

1.1. High speed data transfers between unix systems have been resulting in data loss. This has made file
transfers under univision impossible. The cause of the problem has been isolated to a particular version of
dtc driver and types of rtc's.

1.2. The resolution described below only applies to at & t unix svr4 version 02-02-00. There is no resolution
       available for previous releases.

        Change

2. The resolution comes in two parts :

2.1.to prevent data corruption the dtc driver loaded must be version 2.01.01.07 or better. If it is an earlier
release then it has to be upgraded.

A)ensure that the user has a fully verified filesave.

B)ensure all users are logged out of both univision and unix and all processes are at the unix login prompt.

        (tech serv ref 28/7/1)

C)at the system console, in root enter

        Init 1

This will put the system into the single user mode.

D)package remove the existing dtc package.

E)package add the new dtc driver.

F)reconfigure the dtc/rtc networks and relink the kernel as prompted.

2.2. only the following rtc's should be used for high speed data transfers :

        Hps - 708x - 030

        Hps - 79xx

Older style rtc will not support high speed data transfers.

A high speed data transfer is any machine to machine transfer.

VDU and printers interfaced to any style of rtc are not affected by this problem.

It is essential that at least one rtc installed at any univision site must be either a hps-708x-030 or an hps
        79xx.

If a configuration only has hps - 79xx rtc's installed, then no further action is required.

At sites where old style rtc's have been configured, then the following will occur :

A)all rtc's at all unix sites will be checked using the systech warranty database to identify what types
have been installed. Engineers will be directed to identify one rtc as the `golden rtc'.

B)the `golden' rtc be a -030 variant which will be used for any data transfer purposes.

C)if the `golden' rtc fails then it must be replaced with an rtc of exactly the same type.

The `golden' rtc will be identified by gold tape wrapped around the power connect to the rtc.

Diagnostic modems, special communications packages, mentor fax etc. Are all to be connected to the `golden' rtc.

D)any other rtc failure will be handled in the normal way.

3. Recommended action

Advise the service centre that the rtc has been marked as directed.

        Command 1 suppress header
