REASON FOR CHANGE: TO OVERCOME UNEXPECTED SYSTEM HALT

Problems

1.         Units affected

            AT&T 3238 and 3338 units (globalyst 520 and 530) experiencing the condition
            described in the "explanation" section of this bulletin.

2.         Explanation

            When using an isa add-on card, which uses the i/o port addresses 1a9h, 2a9h or
            3a9h, the system may halt unexpectantly. This failure is caused by an address
            decode problem within the pci bridge chip u19 (vt82c505 rev ce). Most, but not all,
            add-on cards provide an alternate port address that can be used to bypass this
            problem.

3.         Nature of changes

            If a 3238 or 3338 has an add-on card that is experiencing the problems described
            above, the main board must be replaced by a main board with an at&t part number
            of 008-0078289 a or 008-0078292 a or newer. The new main board can be ordered
            from xxxxxx. The defective part will be returned to repairs.

4.         Installation procedure, field

            Caution: follow proper esd precautionary procedures.

            To remove the main board:

4.1.     disconnect all cables from the rear of the computer.

4.2.     remove the cabinet cover.

4.3.     to access the main processor board (mpb), first remove all adapter cards from the
          bus extension board. It is secured by two screws to the interior support running
          from the front to the back of the computer.

4.4.     remove the flex drive.

4.5.     unplug all cables from the mpb.

4.6.     remove the screws that secure the main board and remove the board.

4.7.     remove processor, memory simms and vga ram chips, if present.

4.8.     install the processors, simms and vga ram into the new main board. If the bios chip
          is not on the new board, remove it from the board being replaced and install it on
          the new board.

4.9.     install the new main board, flex drive and bus extension board.

4.10.   install all adapter cards that were removed from the bus extension board.

4.11.   connect all cables that were removed from the rear of the computer.

4.12.   power up the pc and run service diagnostics to verify that the pc is working
          correctly.

4.13.   reinstall the cabinet.

5.       Installation procedure, repairs

          Returned boards will be upgraded as follows:

5.1.     remove u19 (vt 82c505 ce)

5.2.     solder new pci bridge chip vt 82c505 cf (at&t p/n 008-0028839 a) at location u19.

5.3.     label board with the new part number 008-0078292 a.

6.        Parts list/parts ordering

           The chip vt 82c505 cf will be available from ncr elc heerlen or ncr pdrc peachtree
           city.

           Repair centres may order the necessary quantity of chips from elc herlen or pdrc
           peachtree city.

7.        Removed parts disposition

           Return the defective main board for repair in the normal manner.
