FECO 3000 # 61

FECO: 3000 # 61
MODIFICATION No: N/A
PRODUCT: GLOBALYST S40.
SUB-ASSEMBLY N/A
ESTIMATED MAN HOURS N/A
CLASS OF CHANGE: INFORMATIONAL
REASON FOR CHANGE: CORRUPTION OF BIOS

To recover corrupted BIOS or CMOS on Globalyst S40.

1. Causes of corruption:

1.1 interuption while accessing BIOS or CMOS, for example, power failure during booting or
      whilst using the scu.

1.2 failure to save any changes made to the scu or CMOS, for example, selecting the exit
option without selecting the save option first.

2. Symptoms.

Inability to boot off hard disk, or floppy drive, also unable to enter ctrl a scsi
configuration or basic f1 setups. (system will normally hang at selected boot method
    until power reset).

    Note:

This should not be confused with the inability to boot off the floppy only, while the hard
disk boots ok. To remedy this, enter f1 setups, select boot options , and check primary
boot device is set to "1.44mb floppy" and not to "disabled".

Select 1.44mb floppy from options .

Check secondary boot device is set to hard disk.

    F10 to save and exit.

This will normally occur on re-boot after the scu diskette has been used to change
    settings.

3. Emergency Recovery of Corrupt CMOS.

3.1 power down system and remove side cover.

3.2 ensure full anti static precautions are taken.

3.3 remove processor board(s) and memory module(s) to gain access to switch s8c1, a 3
switch dip-switch on the system board.

    (tech serv ref 97/17)

3.4 sw1 switch should normally be set to off to protect CMOS.

To enable clearing of the CMOS set sw1 to on.

3.5 re-install the boards removed previously, and power on the system.

3.6 wait until the post (power-on self test) has completed. The CMOS will have been reset
      to default values.

3.7 power the system off, and remove the boards re-installed earlier.

3.8 return sw1 of s8c1 to the off position and re-install the boards.

3.9 replace the side cover and power on the system with the scu in the floppy drive. Run
the scu, check the configuration, take the save option and exit.

4. BIOS flash memory special recovery mode.

When the current BIOS is corrupted, there is still a reserved area which cannot be
corrupted. This reserved code is used to boot the system off floppy, with the BIOS
diskette inserted, and automatically recovers the BIOS from recovery files on the
     diskette.

5. Procedure.

5.1 identify the correct current system BIOS level from the display at power-up (normally
1.00.07). Check customers BIOS/flash diskette is at the same level or better.

5.2 power off the system, remove the side cover and remove the processor and memory
module. Locate jumper j7d2 on the system board, near cpu slot 1.

5.3 j7d2 is a vertical 3 pin jumper with pins 1-2 normally linked to disable recovery
     BIOS boot block.

5.4 change jumper to pins 2-3 and replace the cpu and memory module removed above.

5.5 insert the BIOS diskette into the floppy drive and power on the system.

5.6 the system will give a short beep on power-on then after a few seconds give a longer
beep to indicate start of BIOS recovery.

This will take 2 or 3 minutes.

5.7 if the BIOS has flashed successfully, the system will give 2 short bleeps.

5.8 if 4 beeps are heard, the system could not boot off the diskette (diskette may not be
     bootable).

5.9 if multiple low beeps are heard, the wrong BIOS recovery files are being used, or the
flash enable switch, s8c1 sw3, is in the wrong position (off).

5.10 after successful flashing the BIOS, power down the system, remove the processor and
memory module and reset the jumper to 1-2 again.

Re-install the processor and memory module, and refir the side cover.

5.11 power on the system and run the scu diskette to enter a new password (esc) and
        check CMOS settings.

5.12 important:

The above procedures should only be used in an emergency after hardware causes for
the boot failure have been checked. Do not alter any system board switches or
       jumpers other than those specified.
