MANDATORY BY FIELD SERVICE ON DIRECTION OF THE SERVICE CENTRE MANAGER

Reason for change:

1.        Some NCR 3430 Systems have processor boards which are populated with potentially defective Intel
           sram chips. The failures from these parts are very infrequent and show up a memory parity errors. This
           error is really a cache parity error and is fatal to all operating systems.

2.        Units affected

            NCR 3430 - Units below serial number 36-2579688389

3.        Method

The running of a special diagnostic screen determines whether the processor board contains defective c8c cache srams. If it does the cure is to replace the processor board.

The diagnostic screen and replacement processor are contained in kit no 603-5006515. Kits must be requested through the service centre manager. Ordering authority 15-fro-0178.

4.       ensure the customer has two verified filesaves.

5.       note: follow proper esd precautionary procedures when installing this change.

6.1     have the user perform the necessary procedures to shutdown the system in an orderly manner.

6.2     power off the system.

6.3     insert the diagnostics screen (p/n 515-0002165) into the a flex drive.

6.4     boot the system. The test runs automatically and will test each processor board separately.

6.5     if an error is reported do the following:

A:remove the side panel. This is accomplish by removing the two thumb screws located on the back of the system and pushing up on the release in the inside of the drive bay door.

B:take out the processor board which was identified by the utility as being defective (a=top slot, b= bottom slot).

C:install the known good board provided in the kit.

7.       Testing

If the processor board was replaced run the diagnostics screen on the new processor board. For an added measure of confidence run the service diagnostics.

8.       Return redundant kit parts to the service centre manager, who is to arrange disposed i.a.w. cssb

9.       Recording action

Affix a modification label adjacent to the serial number, if one is not already in place. Strike through but do not obliterate 2.

Complete all relevant documentation.
