AXIS 560 NETWORK PRINT SERVER on AIX without UNIVISION

  1. This FECO IO#8 is in addition to FECO IO#6/1.
FECO IO#6/1 paras 1 to 4 apply to this FECO, only paragraphs 4, 5 & 6 are different.

  2. Throughout this FECO a SPACE in a string is shown by a Ñ .
All other spaces are purely cosmetic

  1. This FECO details how to connect the Axis 560 via an AIX system; without Univision.

  2. To Configure the Network on AIX

5.1    Determine the IP address and alias that has been assigned to the AXIS 560.
         eg 128.0.0.10 LPaxis.

5.2    Attach the print server to the required hub and ensure all cables are connected properly and
          it is turned on.

5.3    Enter root and change directory to the /etc/hosts file.

5.4    Edit the /etc/hosts file in order to assign the print server an IP address. Do this by
         executing vi Ñ /etc/hosts.

5.5    At the bottom of this file add in the IP address and alias you want the print server to be
         configured with and save.
         e.g. 128.0.0.10 LPaxis

5.6    Press the test button on the side of the print server to get a list of settings, including the Mac
address (called Node address on the test print out). It will be in the form nn:nn:nn:nn:nn:nn
where n is a number or letter.

5.7    Log to root using su (if not already in as a root) and
         at the # enter: arp Ñ –s Ñ ether Ñ [alias] Ñ [mac address]
        e.g. arp Ñ -s Ñ ether Ñ LPaxis Ñ 00:40:2B:1255:9E

5.8    It is now possible to test the unit with a ping.
         Execute ping [alias] at the #. e.g. ping Ñ -c3 Ñ LPaxis

  1. To set up the print process

6.1    To download the configuration utility from the Axis print server. Check which directory you
are in now by doing a ‘pwd’ at the # and ensure you are in root. To download this you must
be in root account and execute ftp [alias].
         Enter ftp Ñ LPaxis

6.2    You will be asked for a username and password, enter root and pass respectively.

6.3    At the ftp prompt enter ‘get Ñ axinstall’. This will download the configuration to the current
directory. When the upload has finished enter ‘bye’ to exit.

6.4    You should be back at the #. Here enter 'sh Ñ axinstall'

6.5    The system should now display either a list of Operating Systems or attempt to identify the
host OS. Either accept AIX or select the number for AIX.

                   Select xx for AIX

6.6    The system will now prompt for the print method, so select LPD.

6.7    It will now ask you to enter the host name of the print server, i.e. LPaxis

6.9    The system will now prompt for a logical printer, so select as appropriate:

Logical Printer

Axis Port

PR5

LPT1

PR6

LPT2

PR7

COM1

(N.B. Do not use PR1 to PR4)

6.10    The system will now ask for a name for the printer.
Enter the name eg. LPax _pr5 <CR>

6.11    Using the lpbmladd command setup the printer.
            e.g. lpbmladd Ñ LPax_pr5 <CR>

Do these printer queues require a FORMFEED after each job (y or n ) n
[ for all Charisma users ]

Adding LPxx printer to Unix system
Enter device name for printer: e.g. LPax_pr5 <CR>
[ /dev/LPax_pr5 will be created ] Added print queue "LPax_pr5"
Printer queue LPax_pr5 now added to system. Press any key to continue.

6.12    The printer should now be configured correctly.
To test it execute lp Ñ -d Ñ [printername] Ñ [filename]'
            e.g. lp Ñ -d Ñ LPax_pr5 Ñ /etc/inittab

You must modify the printer configuration for UniVision. Hewlett Packard printers must have a printer type configured as hplazer.
